The photo shows a layer of Altocumulus stratiformis undulatus perlucidus, viewed from an aircraft at an altitude of approximately 1 1000 m over the Italian Alps. At the lower right of the picture, some Cumulus clouds can be seen over the mountains.

An anticyclone (1 030 hPa) is centred just to the south-west of the UK, with a ridge of high pressure extending east over the Alps.
The sounding from Campoformido, Udine, Italy is approximately 180 km to the east-north-east of the location of the aircraft. It shows that the lower atmosphere was moderately unstable to daytime heating (hence the cumulus clouds), but there was an inversion at around 570 hPa.
Most of the anticyclone was clear of cloud, but cloud is evident over the eastern end of the Alps.
