This picture was taken from a location in Argentina to the east of the Andes mountain range during a foehn wind event, known locally as the Zonda wind. The image shows a foehn wall and, downstream, a foehn gap and lenticular cloud.
The foehn wall is a cloud formation which, during an episode of foehn winds, lies over and along a mountain ridge and which appears to an observer downwind from the mountains as a wall of cloud. The foehn wall marks the eastern limit of the cloud that exists over the windward side of the mountain range.
The foehn gap is a cloud-free area just downstream of the mountain ridge, between the cloud on the windward side of the mountain range and the lee wave lenticular clouds downstream on the lee side.
Also of note in the picture is blowing dust lifted by the warm, dry, strong downslope foehn (Zonda) wind.
