The amount of a rainbow arc that can be seen by an observer depends, in part, on both the elevation of the light source (in this case, the Sun) and that of the observer. Over flat terrain near sunrise or sunset, the bow can be almost a semicircle. However, from a high vantage point such as a mountain or an aircraft, a greater part of a circle may be seen.
Some 215° of the rainbow arc can been seen in this picture, which was taken near sunset from the elevated vantage point of the summit of Mt. Wendelstein (altitude 1838 m) in the Bavarian Alps, Germany. Outside of the primary rainbow, a faint secondary bow is also visible.
