In this panoramic picture, the Earth's shadow is shown, before sunrise, cast onto the atmosphere above the horizon opposite the Sun. It has a distinct blue-grey colour, often with a rose violet ribbon bordering the upper edge of the shadow – this is the anti-twilight arch, also known as the “Belt of Venus”. As the field of view in this panorama extends as far as the sunward horizon at the left and right edges of the picture, the twilight arch at 3 and 4 can be seen.

The shadow has a distinct blue-grey colour and is rising above the horizon as the Sun lowers further below the opposite horizon. The rose violet ribbon bordering the upper edge of the shadow is the anti-twilight arch, also known as the “Belt of Venus”. As the field of view in this panorama extends as far as the sunward horizon at the left and right edges of the picture, the twilight arch at 3 and 4 can be seen.

This image shows colouration in the sky opposite the Sun, about seven minutes after sunset (1643 hours). The dark blue-grey band just above the horizon is the shadow of the Earth cast on the atmosphere. It merges quickly into the pink band – a band also known as the “Belt of Venus” – above where the Sun, which is below the opposite horizon at the time of observation, is still shining on to the upper atmosphere. The anti-twilight shadow merges more smoothly into the blue of the sky above.
