Cirrocumulus species lenticularis, which appears in patches shaped like lenses or almonds. They are often very elongated and usually have well-defined outlines. The patches are mostly smooth and are very white throughout. This image overall shows distinct undulations, making it the variety undulatus. It also shows some small transverse ripples seen at times in Cirrocumulus cloud.

The clouds in this image are characterized as Cirrocumulus due to their whiteness; the general absence of shading; and the presence of fine ripples and very small rounded elements. These patches have a broadly elongated lens shape (seen at 3 and 4) when seen in profile and reasonably well-defined outlines, as found in the species lenticularis. Behind the cloud, the diffraction of light from the Sun by tiny cloud droplets (or sometimes small ice crystals) is causing a partial corona. The pastel shades of irisation can also be seen on the lower lenticular cloud.

The photograph shows Cirrocumulus as a series of thin, transparent, high-level patches of cloud, which are bright white and without shading. The rather smooth lens shapes identify them as the species lenticularis; some contain a weak, fine-scale internal structure.

The clouds are characterized as Cirrocumulus by their whiteness, the absence of shading and the presence of fine ripples at 1, 2 and small rounded elements. The patches have a shape which suggests more or less broadly that of a spindle or of a lens seen in profile.
Over central and southern France a low-pressure area (heat low) was developing in the maritime tropical air.
