St. Elmo's fire is a more or less continuous, luminous electrical discharge in the atmosphere emanating from pointed objects in a strong electric field. It may be seen at night as a bright blue or violet glow appearing from tall objects such as masts, spires, lightning conductors and chimneys, or from aircraft in flight.
In this image, glowing light flashes were photographed through the front window of a Boeing 737 aircraft. Passengers may sometimes notice the phenomenon on wing tips.
