Jets are a type of short-lived luminous electrical discharge formed in the upper regions of the atmosphere above large thunderstorms. They include blue jets, blue starters and gigantic jets.
This image shows a gigantic jet viewed from Puerto Rico above a thundercloud estimated to be approximately 45 km away. The gigantic jet shot rapidly upwards from the Cumulonimbus top to the lower regions of the ionosphere. Its appearance involved a bright discharge channel that emerged from the cloud top and transitioned to a blue column that became red and fragmented at the top. An overshooting Cumulonimbus top is visible to the right of the gigantic jet.
