Stratus fractus occurs in the form of irregular, ragged shreds of cloud, the outlines of which change ceaselessly and often rapidly. In this image, the Stratus fractus formed in moist, turbulent air beneath a precipitating Cumulonimbus cloud. Ragged shreds can be clearly seen beneath the dark base of the Cumulonimbus at 1 and 2.
