This photograph shows an extensive field of mamma in middle-level cloud. The cloud genus probably originated as Altostratus; however, this example is identified as Altocumulus as the mamma is transitioning to rounded masses. Nearby observations and an upper-air sounding place the base of the cloud at 4 000 m (13 000 ft).
A slow-moving, waving cold front was over the west of UK. A medium-level trough moved north-east over southern England.
