Cette photographie montre la surface inférieure sombre caractéristique des cumulonimbus. La hauteur de la base du nuage était estimée à 3 000 m (9 000 ft), ce qui correspond à l'étage moyen. La présence d'un cumulonimbus à une altitude si élevée est rare et est due au fait qu'il s'est formé à partir d'un altocumulus castellanus. En raison de son origine, ce nuage est donc appelé cumulonimbus altocumulogenitus. Une colonne de précipitations est visible au loin.

À 1500 heures (heure locale), près du moment de la prise du cliché, un talweg se trouvait à proximité du lieu de l'observation (indiqué par la flèche rouge). Un front froid s'approchait de la région depuis l'ouest.
Le sondage effectué à l'aéroport de Melbourne (Victoria, Australie – OMM 94866) plus tôt dans la journée montre une atmosphère très sèche à basse altitude. Entre 700 et 500 hPa, on peut constater une certaine humidité. Au-dessus de 700 hPa, l'atmosphère se trouvait dans un état instable, ce qui a favorisé un développement convectif à l'étage moyen.
