In the foreground of this photograph, we see small cumuliform turrets that are rising vertically from a patch of Stratocumulus cloud and are connected by a common, relatively horizontal base. This defines the species castellanus. The turrets are sometimes taller than they are wide, but in this instance they are not very tall and are likely in the early stages of development. Castellanus is particularly evident when seen from the side, with the turrets seemingly arranged in lines. Of particular interest in this image is the presence of virga falling from the cloud at 2 and 3, which is an unusual feature of Stratocumulus. Cumulus congestus can be seen in the distance.
