Cumulus fractus can be distinguished from Stratus fractus by its greater vertical extent; round and dense structure; and domed tops. These features can be compared against the Stratus fractus in the foothills.
Cumulus and Stratus developed in the moistened air beneath rain-bearing Cumulus congestus and fresh to strong low-level winds were responsible for the ragged and frayed appearance of both cloud types.
