The photo shows an invading extensive layer of Altocumulus in the form of merged rounded masses. Ceilometer data indicated the height of the base as 2 400 m (8 000 ft); this was in agreement with an earlier nearby upper-air sounding.
The cloud was thick enough throughout to mask the position of the Sun. The leading edge of the layer can be seen near the south-east horizon, which confirms the layer is still in the process of invading. A mild example of anti-crepuscular rays can also be seen toward the anti-solar point.
