This photograph shows the characteristic dark underside of a Cumulonimbus cloud. The cloud base had an estimated height of 3 00 m (9 000 ft), which is within the middle level. This is unusually high – the result of the Cumulonimbus developing from Altocumulus castellanus. On account of its origin, this is Cumulonimbus altocumulogenitus. A precipitation shaft is visible in the distance.

At 1500 hours local time, close to the time of the image, a trough line was present near the location (shown by the red arrow). A cold front was approaching from the west.
The sounding from Melbourne Airport, Victoria, Australia (WMO 94866), taken earlier in the day, shows a very dry lower atmosphere. Between 700 and 500 hPa, some moisture is present. Above 700 hPa, the atmosphere is unstable, favouring medium-level convective development.
