Character and intensity of precipitation

As illustrated in the chart below, the character and intensity of precipitation (intermittent or continuous; slight, moderate, or heavy) can be indicated with unique arrangements of the basic symbols.

Combinations of the basic symbols may be used to indicate more complex situations. For example:

• Symbols  or denote a mixture of falling raindrops and snowflakes;
• Symbol indicates a thunderstorm with rain at the place of observation.
