Cirrocumulus is distinguished from Cirrostratus by:
- Having ripples or grains; any fibrous, silky or smooth portions do not collectively constitute its greater part
- Usually being thin enough to show the disc of the Sun or Moon but sometimes being thicker so that only the position of the Sun or Moon is revealed
- Possible irisation
- No halo phenomena
- Possible virga
- Possible mamma
