Lightning: TLEs: Sprites

(Section 3.2.4.1.1)

These are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high in the atmosphere at about 50−90 km, above large thunderstorm systems. They usually occur at the same time as powerful positive cloud-to-ground discharges. They appear as a large, but weak flash, usually of red colour. Sprites last no more than a few seconds. They are rarely seen with the human eye and only at night above distant, large thunderstorms.
