Stratocumulus stratiformis opacus (thick extensive layer) is distinguished from Nimbostratus by:

  • Having a less uniform base
  • Presence of elements, rounded masses, rolls, etc.
  • Precipitation in the form of rain, snow or snow pellets, that is weak in intensity and infrequent in occurrence (Nimbostratus usually has falls of rain, possible falls of snow or ice pellets that can be up to heavy in intensity)
  • Possible asperitas or mamma
  • Absence of pannus (a usual feature of Nimbostratus)
