Stratocumulus is distinguished from Stratus by:

• Presence of elements, rounded masses, rolls, etc.
• Usual absence of a ragged structure, which is a feature of Stratus fractus (Stratocumulus floccus has a ragged lower part with a cumuliform tuft at the top)
• Weak falls of rain, snow or snow pellets  (Stratus has falls of drizzle, snow or snow grains)
• Possible mamma
• Possible virga (the low base of Stratus ensures precipitation reaches the ground)
• Possible corona
